PoSH@Work, an organisation working to prevent sexual harassment, has conducted workshops to train selected IIT Bombay students on prevention of sexual harassment (PoSH). Qualified students have taken on the role of PoSH Champions in the Institute. PoSH champions support aggrieved students and facilitate interaction with Gender Cell.
The goal of these workshops is to help students understand the purpose and application of the Sexual Harassment of Women in the Workplace (SHWW) Act 2013, and the IIT Bombay policy on the prevention, prohibition and redress of sexual harassment at the institute.
The workshops have contained group activities such as role play to understand sexual harassment, its different forms and types, followed by explaining details of the SHWW law's history and the redress mechanisms as per the IIT Bombay policy. Queries of the students are addressed, followed by a pen-paper assessment and viva. In the last workshop, 28 students qualified and they were certified as PoSH Champions.
Gender Cell has been conducting interactive sessions for first year students on gender sensitization. The purpose of these workshops is to spread awareness about sexual harassment, its forms and the existing support system in campus for help. In 2019, these sessions were conducted for all incoming UG and PG students. These 3000 students were divided into batches of 50. Each session was led by a PoSH champion who conducted different activities to make it more interactive. Online Feedback from the students was also taken for future improvements. Logistics support was provided by the Institute student mentor programs: ISMP, ISCP and IRSCP.
A training session was conducted on 31st July 2019 for members of the Internal Complaints Committee (ICC) of IIT Bombay. The resource person was Advocate Monika Sakhrani, an external member of the ICC, and a lawyer. Topics discussed included the IIT Bombay Policy on the Prevention, Prohibition and Redress of Sexual Harassment in the Workplace, the SHWW Act 2013 on which the policy is based and the steps involved in an ICC inquiry. 20 participants attended the training including faculty members, staff and students.
The Gender Cell has planned a series of sessions on gender sensitization for Institute staff members. An awareness session on gender sensitization was conducted for all staff members of IRCC on February 11, 2020. It was attended by about 60 participants. The session included the roles and objectives of Gender Cell and a discussion on what is sexual harassment, how to identify it and its impact. Details of the mechanisms in the Institute to address sexual harassment and IIT Bombay's policy on prevention, prohibition and redress of sexual harassment were discussed. Similar sessions are being planned for other Institute staff members.
Awareness sessions on gender issues are conducted for students holding positions of responsibility in the Institute. At the beginning of each academic year, Gender Cell members interact with student mentors from ISMP, ISCP and IRSCP programs, and discuss the role of Gender Cell, IIT Bombay policy on prevention, prohibition and redress sexual harassment, how to address concerns of students in a sensitive manner, and sources of support.
A similar session is conducted for the organizing team members of Mood Indigo and TechFest before these events. These events attract a large number of students of various institutes. Hence it is important that the organisers be alert and aware of sexual harassment incidents that may arise, to help create a safe space. These sessions covered the functions of the Gender Cell, basics of the IIT Bombay Policy, and what the student mentors and organizers should do in case sexual harassment issues arise.
